Esna is a beautiful city located about 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Luxor. The city is unique in that it was built on top of the ruins of the Temple of Khnum. The entrance to the temple is via a tourist trail that leads from the river. However, only the Hypostyle Hall has been discovered, the lower level of which is 8 meters (27 ft) below the street. The discovery shows how the sand and debris have accumulated over the years since the temple was abandoned. Roman times At its peak, the temple was as large as the Edfu temple. The temple, dedicated to Khnum, the chief god of Esna, was originally built by Ptolemy VI on the older structure. Later, the Romans added the Hypostyle Hall, which has 24 columns decorated with decorative ornaments.
