Physical and mental health

Medication

Not all medicines are available without a prescription or prescription in Europe that are available in other countries. Some are considered illegal or controlled substances, even if prescribed by a European doctor. If you are considering bringing medicine, check whether it is legal in Egypt. Make sure you have enough legal medicine for your trip. Bring a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor stating: What is the medicine? the dose you need for personal use

Health risks

To protect yourself from getting sick: Drink boiled or bottled water with the lid closed Do not swim in fresh water, including the Nile, to avoid waterborne diseases such as bilherzia (schistosomiasis). Do not touch dogs or cats See a doctor if you are bitten by an animal. Keep your home insect-free Use insect repellent Wear long, loose-fitting clothing and a collar See a doctor if you have trouble breathing or have lung disease

Medical facilities

The standard of medical facilities in Cairo is enough for routine illnesses. Elsewhere, facilities can be very basic. Treatment can also be costly. Many require up-front payment.

If you become seriously ill or injured, you’ll need to be evacuated to a place with better facilities. Medical evacuation can be very expensive and hard to organise. Ensure you have sufficient travel insurance to cover the costs.
